According to a new study by researchers at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Michigan, a compound derived from broccoli may help prevent or treat breast cancer by attacking the cancer stem cells (a small number of cells that stimulate the growth of tumors).

The study tested sulforaphane, a component of broccoli, both in mice and cell cultures. The researchers found that sulforaphane was heading towards cancer stem cells and eliminated, preventing the development of new tumors.

In the present study, the researchers used mice with breast cancer were injected with various concentrations of sulforaphane in broccoli extract form. The researchers used, then several established methods to assess the number of cancer stem cells in tumors.

These measurements showed a marked decrease in the population of cancer stem cells after treatment with sulforaphane, with little effect on normal cells. In addition, cancer cells from mice treated with sulforaphane were unable to generate new tumors. The researchers tested, then the sulforaphane in cell cultures of human breast cancer in the lab, finding similar decreases in the number of cancer stem cells.

Current chemotherapies are not effective against cancer stem cells, which are the cause of the cancer will grow and spread. Researchers believe that the elimination of cancer stem cells is key to controlling cancer.

The results of a recent study add to the body of evidence that coffee protects against cancer, in this case of cancer of the head and neck.

The full results of the study were published online in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Using data from a pooled analysis of nine studies collected by the consortium inhanced (International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology), participants classified as habitual coffee drinkers, ie those who drank four cups of coffee a day or more, showed 39% lower risk of developing cancer of the pharynx and combined oral cavity, compared with nondrinkers.

Data on decaffeinated coffee were too few to allow for a detailed analysis, but did not indicate an increased risk. Tea consumption was not associated with risk of head and neck cancer.

The association is stronger among regular coffee drinkers (those consuming more than four cups of coffee a day).

Recently, the results of another study published in the January issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention showed a decreased risk of glioma or brain tumors, associated with coffee. According to researchers at Imperial College London, this association was observed between those who drank five or more cups of coffee or tea a day.

A study by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has shown that the grid produces a number of carcinogens in meat. One class of these cancer-causing compounds known as heterocyclic amines (HA) is developed by the effect of heat on amino acids and creatinine in the flesh. In general, the longer the meat is cooked at higher temperatures and more heterocyclic amines are produced. Grilling is the most harmful, followed by fried, while steamed, baked or grilled will produce less HA.

Here are some tips to reduce your intake of HA, based on work by Jim Felton, Garrett Keating and Mark Knize, the research program of the UC-Davis Cancer Center:
- Before roasting the meat on the grill, cook in the microwave part and discard the remaining juice into the bowl. The fact precook a hamburger for a few minutes in the microwave removes up to 95% of the HA.
- Flip burgers often. Flip the burger once per minute reduces the formation of HA up to 100%, probably because the meat is maintained within a lower temperature.
- Marinate meat before grilling. A laboratory study showed that Livermore 40 minutes to marinate the chicken with a mixture of brown sugar, olive oil, cider vinegar, garlic, mustard, lemon juice and salt reduces the formation of HA between u 92 and 99%.
- Use a meat thermometer. Cook poultry to a temperature of 74 ° -82 ° C, ground beef, pork and lamb between 71 ° -76 ° and roasts and steaks between 63 ° -71 °. Do not cook the meat “well past”.
- Take cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and brussels sprouts, one or two days before the barbecue. Each contains a series of compounds that activate an enzyme in our body to neutralize the toxicity of the HA.

Phytoestrogens and Cancer

A phytoestrogen have been attributed several beneficial actions, and perhaps most important is the possibility of reducing the risk of breast cancer. It has long been known that populations with high consumption of soy, such as China and Japan, have a small risk of developing breast cancer, but when they migrate to countries like the U.S. this risk is increased to two generations to match the of the American population.

This modification of the risk of breast cancer for many years was attributed to lower consumption of fat in these populations living in Asia, but recent epidemiological studies have ruled out this possibility, the hypothesis that increasing soy intake, because it contains phytoestrogens may reduce this risk.It has been shown in repeated experiments with animals that phytoestrogens prevent or reduce the development of breast cancer, but tumors in experimental animals are quite different from tumors in people and although, at present, there is no unequivocal demonstration of that phytoestrogens reduce the risk of breast cancer, studies in laboratory animals or epidemiological studies in different populations supports this hypothesis. In any case, a diet with soy and its derivatives is a healthy diet and no ill effects in populations that consume it.

Although there is no clear scientific proof, macrobiotic diets, which include among their soy foods and products, have been linked to lower incidence of breast, prostate and colon, and even better response to treatment of some tumors. This effect has been attributed to phytoestrogens.

Phytoestrogens and Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer with clinical manifestations often also has a 10-15 times higher in U.S. than in Japan. Soy Phytoestrogens inhibit growth of prostate cancer cells in culture and reduce precancerous lesions in the prostate of mice and rats.

In patients with metastatic cancer, using estrogen to retard growth, it is suspected that phytoestrogens may also help reduce the appearance of this tumor and control its progression.

In some epidemiological studies in Oriental populations have found that tofu consumption lowers the risk of prostate cancer.

Regular exercise may reduce cancer risk in women. However, these benefits could be missed if the woman is sleeping too little. Thus put forward a number of U.S. researchers recently.

The study, involving 5968 women in Maryland confirms previous findings, stating that people who perform regular physical activity face a lower risk for esophageal cancer.

But when the researchers looked at women aged 18 to 65 years of diligent exercise every week, they found that sleep seems to play an important role in cancer risk.

People who sleep less than seven hours each night to face the risk of 47 percent for esophageal cancer than those who sleep more among women who are physically active. The researchers reported that a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.

“We thought it was very interesting and arouse curiosity. It’s like the first time doing research. That’s not something that has been studied extensively, “said James McClain from the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, the government, in an interview.

McClain, who led the study, said it was unclear how real is too little sleep may make people more susceptible to cancer. “Sleep has long been sufficiently related to health,” said McClain.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) called the lack of sleep as a public health problem that is not considered, and stated the Americans getting less sleep. The CDC states the percentage of adults who report sleeping six hours or less per night increased from 1985 to 2006.

Experts say lack of sleep on chronic sleep associated with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart and blood vessel disease, depression, smoking and drinking to excess.

Diabetes exacerbates

Sleep deprivation was obstructing the adrenal glands produce DHEA (dehydro-epiandrosteron), a compound that helps stimulate the sleep soundly. As a result, the body becomes more produce cortisol, a steroid trigger stress.

These conditions disrupt the body’s response to the hormone insulin, which is in charge of distribution of blood sugar throughout the body, either to be stored and reused. In the long run, the chaos of this insulin response stimulate the emergence of disturbances of type 2 diabetes symptoms are not dependent on insulin.

The low insulin response caused the decline of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can trigger a chain reaction. Because of the limited blood sugar levels, the brain continues to get orders for our body “stays on”. This led to a sleep disorder, which actually aggravate diabetes.

In diabetics, the sugar supply is limited due to various reasons (too late to eat, work too hard, a strict diet) can trigger hypoglycemia. If you experience hypoglycemia, patients become less sleep and interfere with healing the disease.

The tumor is one wild cells that are in the body and continues to grow at a fixed location or not spread to other parts of the body. Due to this enlargement will appear lumps in certain parts of the body. Therefore, the emergence of a bump on a particular body part, whether painful or not should be wary of a tumor. If not properly treated tumor cells may become cancerous.

In contrast to tumors that do not develop, precisely on cancer cells continue to divide rapidly and uncontrolled. Because of this nature, cancer cells are very easily spread to several parts of the body. If not promptly treated, cancer cells will continue to grow infiltrate into surrounding tissue, then make the child spread to more distant places through the blood vessels and lymph vessels. Cancer cells in blood have spread to many places is very difficult to treat. In fact, medically hope recovery is pretty thin.

Until now, scientists around the world no one can give an assurance of the causes of cancer in a person. Indeed, to date has already conducted various kinds of research with animal experiments to determine the cause of the growth of cancer, but still can not be the exact size.

The factors that cause the growth of cancer:

1. Hereditary factors, both of the parents directly or from his ancestors.
2. Ultraviolet light and radioactive rays (bask in the sun).
3. Carcinogenic materials (eg baked foods and contain preservatives and dyes).
4. Chronic infection / stimulation / irritation.
5. Environmental pollution (air pollution, polluted water).
6. Certain drugs such as hormones.
7. Alcoholic beverages and liquor.
8. Cigarette smoke, apply to passive and active smokers.
9. Diet is one in a long time.
10. Poor endurance (often sick).
11. Fatty foods, both from beef, lamb, pork, and chicken meat country.
12. Changing sexual partners.

Signs or Symptoms of Cancer Growth

Cancer patients are often too late to know the signs or symptoms of cancer cell growth. This is due to ignorance or the patient does not feel any pain at all. Moreover, when cancer grows in hidden parts of the body, such as the brain, lungs, liver, kidney, or intestine. Therefore, the following things need to be aware of:

1. Sore or swollen wound that does not heal.
2. There is a lump or tissue in the body wild anywhere.
3. Mucus or blood discharge from the nipple, anal canal, or other body cavity.
4. Bleeding very much, either when menstruation and are not having periods.
5. Changes in color, shape, or itching of the warts and moles.
6. Small bowel movements or abnormal or impaired.
7. Constant hoarseness or cough that never healed.
8. Have difficulty swallowing for a long time and not lost.
9. Weight loss is increasingly reduced with no known cause.
10. Experiencing constant headaches.
11. Agency is always weak, no energy, fever, pallor, and become inflamed.

Although it can be detected early and treated with the latest therapies, this disease remains a deadly threat.

So far there are about 100 types of cancers that are categorized as not normal cell growth. In addition to the many species, the cause was different in each individual.

How cancer cells arise and grow until now could not be ascertained and some cases even mysterious. In some cases, cancer cells can hide post-treatment. Approximately U.S. $ 200 billion has been used for cancer research since the 1970s.

Here are 10 types of cancer kills the most deadly and most U.S. citizens from 2003-2010, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), as published on vivanews

1. Lung Cancer
This is the top cancer in killing Americans. Product cigarettes is the main cause. This cancer attacks the average age of 55 and 65 years, according to the NCI.

There are two types of this cancer, small cell cancer of lung and non-small cell. This last type most often found, while small cells are the type of the fastest spreading. More than 157,000 people are estimated to die from this cancer in 2010.

2. Colon and Rectum Cancer
Colon cancer tissue grown in the colon, whereas rectal cancer growing in the last few inches of the colon near the rectum, according to the NCI. Most cases started with a small lump, benign cells called polyps that from time to time become cancerous. Screening is recommended to find polyps before they become cancerous, according to the Mayo Clinic. This type of cancer is estimated to kill more than 51,000 people in 2010.

3. Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer found in women in the United States, after skin cancer. However, these cells are also found in men. Almost there are 2,000 cases of men between 2003 and 2008.

Cancer usually forms in the channels that carry milk to the nipple or the glands that produce milk in females. NCI suspect this type of cancer will kill 40,000 in 2010.

4. Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer starts in the tissues of the pancreas, which helps digestion and the regulation of metabolism. Detection and early intervention of cancer cells is difficult because often the case progressive, quietly and quickly, according to the Mayo Clinic. It is estimated that this cancer will kill 37,000 Americans in 2010, according to the NCI.

5. Prostate Cancer
This species is the second leading cause of cancer death in men after lung cancer and bronchitis, according to the NCI. Prostate cancer usually begins to grow slowly in the prostate gland, which produces semen to transport sperm. Some species are still limited to the gland, and easier to treat, but others are more aggressive and quickly spread, according to the Mayo Clinic. Prostate cancer is expected to kill about 32,000 people in 2010, according to the NCI.

6. Leukemia
There are several types of cancer, but all have an effect on blood cell-forming tissues in the body, such as spinal cord and lymphatic system. As a result, the body produces white blood cells to excess. Classification of types of cancer cells is based on how fast growing cells and tissues which are attacked. This type of acute myelogenous leukemia kills the most people in America, ie 41 714 people between 2003 and 2007. Nearly 22,000 people are expected to die of leukemia in 2010.

7. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
This cancer affects the lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells, and lymph nodes is characterized by a larger, fever and weight loss. There are several types of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and they are categorized by how fast the growth of cells and tissues which are attacked. Approximately 20,000 people will end his life in 2010.

8. Liver and bile duct cancer
Liver cancer is one common type of cancer in the world, but rarely found in the United States, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, the number of patients in the United States increases. Most liver cancer that occurs in the U.S. starting in other places and then spread to the liver. The nearest is bile duct cancer, which occurs in the channels that carry bile from the liver to the small intestine. Approximately 19,000 Americans die because of the possibility of these two cancers.

9. Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is the number 4 cause of cancer death in women between 2003 and 2007, according to the NCI. The average age of women diagnosed with it is 63. This cancer is more easy to treat but is detected at an early stage. However, recent research brings a glimmer of light for the detection of early symptoms. This can help the diagnosis, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Symptoms include abdominal discomfort, urgency to urinate and pelvic pain. Nearly 14,000 women will die of ovarian cancer in 2010

10. Esophagus Cancer
This cancer begins in cells lining the esophagus (the tube that carries food from the esophagus to the stomach) and usually occurs at the bottom of the esophagus, according to the Mayo Clinic. This cancer is more attacking males than American women between 2003 and 2007. This year esophagus cancer will kill 14,500.

Brain cancer is a tumor that develops at the expense of the brain. Whether located in the brain or elsewhere in the body, a tumor composed of a mass of cells which reproduce themselves in an uncontrolled way. Tumors can be either benign or malignant.

Benign brain tumors are abnormal collections of cells which reproduce slowly and are most often isolated from surrounding normal brain tissue.

These tumors grow slowly, do not spread to other parts of the brain and are generally easier to excise the malignant tumors. Malignant tumors grow and multiply rapidly. It is difficult to delineate these tumors compared to surrounding normal brain tissue. For this reason it is difficult to remove them completely without damaging the surrounding brain.

We can classify benign and malignant tumors in different groups, depending on the type of cells from which they emerge.

Can be classified as benign tumors following:

* Chordomas, whose origin lies in embryonic cells of the spinal cord or the base of the cranial nerve;

* Hemangioblastomas, which begin in blood vessels;

* Meningiomas, starting in the membrane covering the brain;

* Osteomas in the bone of the skull;

* The pinealomas in the pineal gland;

* The pituitary adenoma in the pituitary;

* The schwannomas, in cells that surround nerves.

Some types of tumors such as meningiomas (arising from the meninges, the lining surrounding the brain) or germ cell tumors can be benign in some cases and malignant in others. This article focuses on brain tumors malignant (cancerous). Brain cancers are relatively rare but often fatal.

They are the second leading cause of mortality among children under 20 years. Malignant brain tumors the most common are gliomas, where cells called glia (support cells for nerve cells) become cancerous. Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common of the gliomas. Glioblastoma multiforme and anaplastic astrocytoma are fast-growing gliomas. Oligodendroglioma, another type of glioma, is also rare, occurs mainly in adults. Gliomas make up between 50% and 60% of all brain tumors (malignant and benign), children and adults alike. Medulloblastoma, which is derived cells of the spinal cord at the base of the brain, is the type of brain tumor most common in children. It occurs most often before puberty. Finally, sarcoma and adenocarcinoma are two kinds of extremely rare brain tumor.
