In this time when it is winter in the northern hemisphere, many pregnant women fall victim to colds or the common cold. Even if you live in the south where it’s summer now, it can also happen that you get a cold due to changes in temperature. If you are pregnant, be careful before choosing an OTC medicine or a medicinal herb to combat your symptoms, they may affect the development of your baby. Learn to take an informed decision.

Ill never good, but during pregnancy, there is no worse nightmare. Women should be careful, though Tilden exaggerated. Laura, who is 6 months pregnant, avoid all sick people “like the plague.” And the truth, even if they hurt her friends, Laura is absolutely right and the right to protect against viruses that are around out there and cause an annoying cold or common cold. There is a reason that many people do not know: During pregnancy the body’s defenses are weakened so that the woman’s body does not reject the baby. That’s why this stage of pregnancy makes women become more prone to viruses and infections. Until the flu.

If this is your case, and suddenly you wake up with a cough, nasal congestion, headaches and other discomforts of cold, do not run to the drugstore to buy any OTC medication. That’s right: aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), acetaminophen (Tylenol) and some herbs should be used with caution and never without asking your doctor.

This is because some medications contain substances that may be harmful to the developing fetus, or have not been well studied for use in pregnant women. This is the recommendation of experts and again confirmed by a pediatrician at the University of California at San Diego, USA.

Therefore, it is best to take precautions against cold medications during the months of your pregnancy. Notes!

- Avoid oral decongestants in the first trimester of your pregnancy, as their ingredients are harmful to the development of the fetal abdominal wall. Use saline drops to help with nasal congestion (in the nose) if you need. They sell them at the pharmacy or you can make at home with warm water, salt and baking soda.

- Beware of herbal ingredients (from herbs) found in many nonprescription drugs or recommend you, as the effect of some herbs can be detrimental to your pregnancy or have not yet been evaluated to determine if it has any effect harmful. So when in doubt err on!

- Do not abuse the candy for the throat, as though they may temporarily relieve, may contain vitamin C and zinc, which must be taken in moderation during pregnancy (80 to 100 milligrams per day of vitamin C and 11 milligrams of zinc )

- Note that the cold medicines contain ingredients to combat a variety of symptoms, and may not need all that to feel better.

- Most important: Talk to your doctor without fail!

If you have a cold or cold and you’re pregnant, you better get some rest, you take plenty of fluids, sleep inclined (with several pillows) and do their best to avoid drugs for the sake of your baby. Prevention is also key: eat well, wash your hands frequently and like Laura, stay away from sick people to keep viruses and infections at bay during your months of gestation.

Asian ginseng is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine as a natural treatment for diabetes. It has been shown to enhance the release of insulin from the pancreas and to increase the number of insulin receptors. It also has a sugar-lowering effect of the blood directly. A recent study found that 200 mg of ginseng extract per day improved blood sugar control and energy levels in type 2 diabetes (NIDDM).

Marsupium pterocarpus – The tree is the source of the Kino of the European Pharmacopoeia. The gum-resin looks like dried blood (Dragon’s Blood). This is often used in India as a natural treatment of diabetes. The flavonoid, epicatechin, extracted from the bark of this plant has shown good for preventing cell damage induced in rats. The epicatechin and a crude extract of Pterocarpus marsupium alcohol have really shown to regenerate functional pancreatic beta cells. Has not been shown any other drug or natural agent to do this activity.

Gymnema Sylvestre. Gymnema assists the pancreas in insulin production in type 2 diabetes. Making this herb an effective diabetes natural treatment. Gymnema also improves the ability of insulin to lower blood sugar in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Reduces cravings for sweets. This herb can be an excellent substitute for sugar drugs that lower oral blood in type 2 diabetes. Take 500 mg of some people by the day of gymnema extract.

Fenugreek experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated the antidiabetic properties of fenugreek seeds. The active ingredient responsible for the anti-diabetic properties of fenugreek is in the defatted portion of the seed covering trogonelline alkaloid, nicotinic acid and coumarin. Two good friends to have – onion and garlic Here are two easy to find natural treatments for diabetes. Go check out the pantry. Both bulbs have been effective as eating blood sugar lowering action. The effects were similar in crude extracts and boiled onions.

Onions affect the hepatic metabolism of glucose and / or boost the release of insulin, and / or stop the destruction of insulin. The onion extract was found to decrease blood sugar levels through oral and intravenous tolerance of glucose. More onion extract used the better the results. Beneficial effects were also observed even for low levels used in the diet (eg., 25 to 200 grams). Raw onion or boiled not make any difference in the results. Onions affect the hepatic metabolism of glucose and / or increase the release of insulin. This can also save from destruction of insulin. The premium you receive from the use of garlic and onions are their beneficial cardiovascular effects. They are found to lower lipid levels, inhibit platelet aggregation and are antihypertensive. Thus, the liberal use of onion and garlic are recommended for diabetic patients. Two large natural treatments diabetes. Just be careful not to get too close to people using these foods.

The blueberry leaves of bilberry anthocyanosides increases capillary reliability, inhibits free-radical damage and enhance the quality of the vascular system. In Europe, is used as anti-haemorrhagic agent in the management of eye diseases including diabetic retinopathy. I heard for a long time how good blueberries are. As a natural treatment of diabetes makes perfect sense to me in the world. A mixture of the leaves of cranberry has a long history of using people in the treatment of diabetes. The myrtillin compound is apparently the most active ingredient. On the shot is somewhat weaker than insulin, but is less toxic, even at 50 times the therapeutic dose 1 g per day. Lasting weeks, a dosage has proven to be a natural treatment for diabetes effectively. Bilberry Bilberry may lower the risk of some diabetic complications such as diabetic cataracts and retinopathy.

Ginkgo biloba extract may prove useful for the prevention and treatment of diabetic neuropathy of early-stage. Cinnamon – effectiveness of insulin in triple advantages of using natural treatments for diabetes compared to drug use are many. Two are, that are safer to use and manage the problem without the side effects that accompany medications quite often. You may have to experiment with these alternative remedies to find one that is best for you.

Be responsible with your care.
At least you have a list of seven natural treatments for diabetes who have had great success with which Aron Walla, lowered his blood sugar by over 50% and regained its normal levels.

There are numerous scientific studies that have attempted to demonstrate the benefits of dietary supplements in a number of situations and pathological conditions. This is a short overview of some of the most important components that have been studied in clinical trials and observational studies:

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid: studies with megadoses of vitamin C have demonstrated that could have a role in the prevention of certain infections. Thus, some studies show its ability to decrease the incidence of catarrhal pictures and pneumonia. Has also been studied in asthma, no conclusive findings throwing. The studies that have explored its antioxidant activity rave provide data about your qualities in the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Folic acid: Folic acid supplementation in the first 6 weeks of pregnancy has been essential to reduce fetal neural tube defects (the future central nervous system). On the other hand is credited with a quality in studies of cancer prevention. In addition, folic acid prevents cardiovascular disease in people with homocysteine ??(an amino acid called homocysteine, which increases the risk of excessive arteriosclerosis). An additional interesting in relation to folic acid is that it relates to depression. It is estimated that 35% of depressed patients have a real deficit of folic acid, a figure that rises to increase up to 90% for the elders also found that this deficit appears to determine a poorer response to antidepressant drug treatment. It is therefore possible that depression is often a solitary manifestation of folic acid deficiency. Either way has not been shown that folic acid supplementation produced a special effect of cognitive improvement and mood in people without previous deficit of the vitamin.

Vitamin E (tocopherol) as antioxidant effects of ascorbic acid, or beta carotene, vitamin E appears to protect against cardiovascular disease and cancer. Studies apparently show the relationship between the contribution of tocopherol at high doses and reducing the incidence of prostate cancer. Also recommended for elderly supplement for the prevention of Alzheimer’s dementia.

Vitamin D (cholecalciferol): In osteoporosis decreases, combined with calcium intake, the incidence of bone fractures. It has documented its possible protective effect for colon cancer, but this should probably be confirmed in future studies.

Tryptophan: An amino acid precursor of serotonin synthesis (brain neurotransmitter key mood, among other functions) which has been shown to increase brain levels of the substance. Several studies report, therefore, its capacity and its apparent antidepressant to reinforcement of the pharmacological effect of antidepressants.

Beta-carotene: An antioxidant that has been attributed the ability to decrease the incidence of cardiovascular disease, especially in smokers, which could not be fully demonstrated.

Lycopene has been informed of the quality of protection against prostate cancer in some studies.

Lutein: It is documented in several studies that might be useful for the prevention of AMD, but this has not been clearly demonstrated.

Omega-3: Clearly, clearly demonstrated beneficial effect in protecting against cardiovascular disease.

LCPUFA (free fatty acids, long chain polyunsaturated). Numerous studies with infant formula supplemented with LCPUFA have shown better visual acuity development of the child and possibly his level of intelligence.

Zinc: Zinc supplementation in pregnancy appear to be related to the decrease in the incidence of babies with low birth weight.

Selenium: a high-dose parenteral administration, selenium seems to reduce mortality in patients admitted to intensive care units for alleged antioxidant properties.

Dietary supplements are clearly beneficial in deficiency states. The conclusion of their benefit in people without related deficits is highly questionable in most cases, but the relative safety of use means it can be interesting to further explore this possibility in future scientific studies.

The means of supplemental therapy

By definition is a type of therapy in which supplements are administered orally, either in the form of capsules, tablets, powders, gel or solution. The basic components are trace elements supplements (vitamins, minerals and vital substances such as certain fatty acids, etc.).. Dietary supplements are also considered some products but not properly trace extracts of tissues or specific foods (shark cartilage for example.)

Supplemental therapy applications

Dietary supplements therapy itself does not have a range of disease-specific applications. Its applications are more varied in situations where it is desirable to prevent a health condition or improve some physical or mental quality. Infections, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, degenerative diseases, etc.. are, to name a few, a good example of an ambitious list of applications that purported advocates say this kind of therapy that are possible to prevent. However, it is true that deficiency diseases (such anecdotal so rare in the West) are a clear indication of the supplemental therapy, of course. Is supplemental therapy safe?

Supplemental therapy is quite safe. There are many people who use dietary supplements regularly and does not seem real that involves short-term adverse effects. This is due to the fact that most of the trace elements consumed in excess are immediately eliminated by the body via the kidneys or liver.

But to know that there are some trace elements, having a greater lipid solubility or different metabolic possess qualities tend to accumulate in the liver or in adipose tissue of our body, this is the case for example of fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin A, D, E and K, mainly. A group of people very fond of dietary supplements is of some elite athletes and people who play sports in gyms, which consume ergogenic purposes (to increase muscle strength or exercise tolerance). In this type of people have been isolated cases of liver disease, including liver failure with the tremendous overuse of supplements with fat-soluble substances, but in practice this is fortunately exceptional.

On the other hand, has also seen some dietary supplements that cause drug interactions with certain medications, which deserves to be taken into account in people who are subject to specific medication class as anticonvulsants, antiarrhythmics, etc..

Therapy of dietary supplements is seeking intended to prevent or improve a health problem by the use of substances that constitute or contain vital substances from the diet or the like. You may also be aimed at improving an aspect of child development or youth or enhance a particular physical or mental quality.

It should be noted that in the United States the concept of a dietary supplement is extremely broad, so named because all those medicinal products not officially considered as drugs by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, the regulator of health products and food in the U.S. ) So it also includes herbal remedies. But these products represent a specific type of therapy called phytotherapy apart, so it will not discuss that here.

The source of supplemental therapy

Therapy dietary supplements started a few decades ago, when the important discoveries emerged on metabolism and nutrition unveiled the important role of vitamins and minerals. He soon began to emerge a trend that supported the idea that many diseases could be caused by deficiencies of certain trace elements and supplements such immediate principles so necessary for metabolic competition were guaranteed not to suffer such illnesses.Later came to join this approach the idea that more trace elements, the better metabolic functioning and therefore more health benefits. This is not really so, but many people believed, and still more apparent when checking the safety of vitamin and mineral supplements. Certainly, vitamins, minerals and some types of fatty acids and amino acids are essential metabolic elements, but generally provided at extra doses to which already contains a healthy and balanced diet is not an additional benefit over the functions they perform .

However, it was later discovered that some other trace elements that could have an additional beneficial effect of its metabolic role per se for its antioxidant properties or other, so that scientific studies began to emerge that sought to demonstrate the qualities of dietary supplements in large doses (especially vitamin.) This effort to discover a prominent role in certain trace elements has been nurtured by thousands of studies and can say that today really still very much alive.

The soy products have also proven useful in the treatment of hot flashes experienced by some patients after menopause, in whom symptoms do not eliminate but reduce their frequency. Although phytoestrogens can be useful in these cases, and also enjoy the aura of “natural remedy” we must remember that the greatest effect in preventing hot flashes and osteoporosis is achieved with administration of estrogens, which are obtained as natural as a source of mare’s urine.

Phytoestrogens and cholesterol

Phytoestrogens also have a favorable effect on cholesterol and descending LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and raise the HDL (good cholesterol) and also in monkeys prevent the development of arteriosclerosis.
Other effects of phytoestrogens

The only adverse effect found in animals that ingest large amounts of phytoestrogens is a decrease in fertility. This effect has not been detected in humans and in fact the Chinese and Japanese populations, taking greater amounts of phytoestrogens, are not characterized by lower fertility.

Although most studies indicate that soy, tofu and other products derived from it can have these benefits, probably mediated by phytoestrogens, there is insufficient scientific basis for recommending the use of phytoestrogen supplements or soy extracts. These products, like vitamins, it is best to take them into the natural form of food which are not inside the envelope of a capsule.

Ipriflavone is a synthetic substance with similar chemical structure to phytoestrogens and metabolized in the body produces identical to phytoestrogens from soy. This substance increases the calcification of bone, so it is thought that phytoestrogens may also share this effect. In rats has also been shown that phytoestrogens increase bone calcium with a power similar to estrogen, and some studies in postmenopausal women also showed an increase in bone calcium content with the consumption of about 40 grams of soy protein. This amount is rather high and difficult to achieve by taking natural foods from soybeans.

A phytoestrogen have been attributed several beneficial actions, and perhaps most important is the possibility of reducing the risk of breast cancer. It has long been known that populations with high consumption of soy, such as China and Japan, have a small risk of developing breast cancer, but when they migrate to countries like the U.S. this risk is increased to two generations to match the of the American population.

This modification of the risk of breast cancer for many years was attributed to lower consumption of fat in these populations living in Asia, but recent epidemiological studies have ruled out this possibility, the hypothesis that increasing soy intake, because it contains phytoestrogens may reduce this risk.It has been shown in repeated experiments with animals that phytoestrogens prevent or reduce the development of breast cancer, but tumors in experimental animals are quite different from tumors in people and although, at present, there is no unequivocal demonstration of that phytoestrogens reduce the risk of breast cancer, studies in laboratory animals or epidemiological studies in different populations supports this hypothesis. In any case, a diet with soy and its derivatives is a healthy diet and no ill effects in populations that consume it.

Although there is no clear scientific proof, macrobiotic diets, which include among their soy foods and products, have been linked to lower incidence of breast, prostate and colon, and even better response to treatment of some tumors. This effect has been attributed to phytoestrogens.

Phytoestrogens and Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer with clinical manifestations often also has a 10-15 times higher in U.S. than in Japan. Soy Phytoestrogens inhibit growth of prostate cancer cells in culture and reduce precancerous lesions in the prostate of mice and rats.

In patients with metastatic cancer, using estrogen to retard growth, it is suspected that phytoestrogens may also help reduce the appearance of this tumor and control its progression.

In some epidemiological studies in Oriental populations have found that tofu consumption lowers the risk of prostate cancer.

What are phytoestrogens?

Plants are chemical factories true, since during the maturation process of growth and synthesize thousands of different substances. In fact, until recently most of the drugs were obtained from plants and, even today, substances such as caffeine, cocaine and morphine are obtained from them.

Plant foods contain many different chemicals, some are known by the names of carbohydrates, protein, fat and vitamins, namely the so-called nutrients, which are needed for normal body metabolism. In addition to these components, these foods contain other substances, known by the name of phytochemicals and nutrients that are not considered. Many have no known activity in the body, but others can have harmful actions (cholesterol, purines, oxalic acid, anti-nutrients, etc.). Or even beneficial actions. Most of the effects of phytochemicals has not been studied in depth, although currently being investigated very actively in this field. It is thought that many of them may have beneficial effects, especially in preventing diseases such as arteriosclerosis and cancer.

A special type of phytochemicals found in soybeans and products derived therefrom such as tofu and some whole grain cereal or in flaxseed are phytoestrogens. Within phytoestrogens include several different substances as isoflavones, coumestans, lignans and genistein that share a similar chemical structure to estrogen.

Actions of Phytoestrogens

These substances have a strong antioxidant activity and similar actions, though considerably weaker than estrogen or female sex hormones. This particular action “hormonal” phytoestrogens gives some very interesting features in the prevention and treatment of some diseases, which were probably the most studied phytochemicals.
